On a beautiful summer afternoon, with no expectations, I discovered a cute little place to picnic with friends: Les Jardins de la petite école de Céline, or rather, the world of Alice in Wonderland.

 Worth the detour

This curious little garden, not far from Sainte-Marie, in Saint-Marguerite in the Beauce region, is well worth the detour to spend a peaceful afternoon in an enchanting universe. My friends and I had saved the most beautiful day of the week for our little picnic outing. However, we wanted to get off the beaten track and discover a new place we’d heard about recently: Les Jardins de la petite école de Céline. This garden is actually the enormous backyard of a house, transformed and landscaped into a floral paradise by the owner year after year.

 Picnic time

As soon as we arrived, I noticed the sheer size of the grounds and the variety of plants there – it smells delicious, I guarantee! Since we were starving, we quickly found a shady spot near the big trees and the stream to set up our tablecloth and lunch. A number of secluded areas throughout the grounds have been set up with tables and chairs for visitors to relax in – it’s all very intimate and charming. There’s so much to choose from! As for us, we decided to be traditional and lay the tablecloth on the ground, like a real picnic – why not!

 Tea time

After lunch, it was time for a tour of the gardens. There are several themed gardens along the way, including a gnome garden, a frog pond, a children’s garden, a restored barn and even a historical trail with interpretive panels recounting the history of the municipality of Sainte-Marguerite. Many types of plants and flowers, some well-known and others unique, can be found here. Who knows, maybe you’re a future botanist!

What’s more, you can also enjoy Japanese tea in the Asian pavilion. Nothing better to complete this moment of tranquility in my opinion. You leave feeling relaxed, almost as therapeutic as an afternoon at the spa. After our visit, we decided that a picnic at Céline’s Jardins de la petite école would be a must-do every season.
