As the mother of two young children, Laurence is passionate about the outdoors.

On a beautiful summer’s morning, I meet up with my childhood friends at Domaine Joly-De Lotbinière for a picnic under the canopy of century-old trees. An enchanting natural site, perfect for a relaxing moment with new mothers.

 The reunion

Even before arriving at the gardens, we were charmed by the route we took to get there, the famous Route des Navigateurs, the 132. Me, from Quebec City, and them, from Joliette. Yes, they drove 2 hours to spend a little time with me… or was it to see little Sacha, my brand-new six-week-old baby? It’s true that the 132, with its magnificent ancestral houses, rural landscapes and views of the river, quickly makes us lose track of time and enjoy the drive!

Happy to find ourselves in this picturesque setting, we begin our visit with a chat, children in our arms, smiles on our faces. We wander through the various gardens of the Romantic movement, stopping to learn the name of a new plant from the tour guide, smell the fragrance of the flowers or take photos in this enchanting setting. Little Hubert marvels at all the colors and smells, while Sacha sleeps peacefully in the stroller, lulled by the fresh air and the many birdsongs.

Picnic under the black walnut trees

For our picnic, we settle down in the shade of century-old black walnut trees, close to a seigniorial driveway framing the view of the Maison de Pointe Platon. This is where we meet Hélène, the Domaine’s former general manager, who explains that this is the most northerly plantation of noble hardwoods in North America. How impressive it is to be in such a special place steeped in history!

We enjoy a box lunch concocted with local produce by chef Gaston Couillard of Domaine de l’Oie toquée. On the menu: lentil salad, grilled cheese with Gouda and apple compote, croûton, chicken rillettes and blueberry jam, veal tataki on spiced cake and, to finish on a sweet note, a maple flan. What a delight!

 A walk in the shade

Finally, to digest and round off our outing, we take a look at the romantic pond, where an installation of colorful parasols lines the small paths. The shade is much appreciated on this hot summer’s day.

Unfortunately, not only for lack of time, but also because of the strollers, we don’t venture into the old-growth forest trails or down to the river bank, where the tide is still high. It’s a pity, because it all looks so beautiful. We’ll have to come back when our minis can walk!

 Beauty to share

Back from this beautiful day, I hasten to tell my parents, who own land in the Lanaudière region where, with my brother, they have planted a small orchard of black walnut trees and over 25,000 trees. I thought they’d really appreciate the beauty of the site… I should have known they’d already been there. It’s true that the site is recognized as one of the most beautiful gardens in North America, so who wouldn’t know. So whether it’s for its flowers, its history, its impressive biodiversity or simply to enjoy the fresh air and have a picnic, it’s definitely a place to visit!
