Fall getaway: a weekend exploring Parc national de Frontenac

Pascale Anctil

It was one of those early autumn weekends when the excitement of exploring a new and undiscovered corner of the world soars. We loaded the canoe onto the roof of the car, got all our camping gear together, and off we went on our adventure! We headed for Parc national de Frontenac, in the Saint-Daniel sector.

 A perfect camp

After leaving the motorway, we took these small country roads typical of the Chaudière-Appalaches region. We passed through golden fields and charming villages, each bend bringing us a little closer to our destination.

As soon as we arrived at the outdoor base, the main building greeted us with a breathtaking view of Grand Lac Saint-François. At reception, an enthusiastic lady enthused us with a list of activities and must-see places to explore. We didn’t hesitate to follow her advice!

Our campsite, located in Baie-aux-Rats-Musqués, was simply perfect: on the edge of the lake, facing the horizon, with its promise of spectacular sunsets. After setting up camp, we eagerly took to the canoe to explore the peaceful waters in the golden light of the late afternoon.

 The tranquillity of fall camping

The next morning, we followed the recommendation of the lady at the reception and headed for the trail de la Tourbière. As soon as we set off, I understood why she was so enthusiastic about it. The wooden footbridges stretched for miles through a forest alternating between conifers and peat bogs as far as the eye could see. With each step, a new natural scene was revealed. The air was saturated with the scents of the boreal, and textures of lichen, bark and wild mushrooms coexisted with orange ferns and carnivorous plants that contrasted with the green mats of sphagnum moss. Every detail evoked the richness of biodiversity, a veritable wild garden, a moment of pure symbiosis.

After breakfast, we set off on our next adventure, travelling along the coastline and shores of Grand Lac Saint-François. The beaches and picnic areas, deserted at this time of year, gave us the impression of having the lake and the territory to ourselves. It’s this feeling of peace and quiet, so typical of autumn camping, that I appreciate so much.

 Under the stars

On the final evening, we rounded off the day with a sumptuous sunset followed by a chinese fondue under the stars by the campfire.

 Breathtaking life in the region

The next morning, sleeping in was out of the question, as we were determined not to let the opportunity to reach the summit of Mount Adstock (link in french) slip away. Ever since we arrived, I’d had one thing on my mind: seeing the sunrise there. We chose a path that would take us to the summit in just 45 minutes. The climb, although quick, offered a breathtaking view of the region. At the summit, the first rays of sunlight caressed the horizon, illuminating the region.

The satisfaction of the return was far greater than the effort itself. Coming back, bundling up in our sleeping bag, warming up, dozing off and then imagining we’d been dreaming…

This escapade in the Chaudière-Appalaches region will remain engraved in our memories. And we already know that we’ll be back one day to explore other hidden treasures of this region.
