Christine in the land of apples and cider!

Christine Talbot

Many people are familiar with Cap-Saint-Ignace’s reputation for its apples, but let me tell you that this experience goes far beyond the simple pleasure of biting into a piece of fruit.

As a proud Capignacian (as the citizens of my charming village in the Chaudière-Appalaches region are known), I myself was delighted by the welcome I received from the apple growers during a fabulous tour of our local orchards along the Chemin de Bellevue. It’s an experience that goes way beyond simple flavours!

My first stop: Verger Gaudreau | Cidrerie du Chemin 9

As soon as I arrived at his place, an irresistible smell filled the shop. The sweet, comforting scent of apple butter. Francis, the owner, and his daughter invited me to try this delicious treat with its melt-in-the-mouth texture and incomparable sweetness. As we chatted, I could feel the passion that drives them, the commitment that drives them to innovate every year, and the importance of passing on their love of the land. Naturally, I left the shop with a few jars and a promise to return.

Next stop: Domaine RITT - Cidrerie & Vergers

An autumnal atmosphere is guaranteed as staff come and go with their arms full of apples. Here, ciders reign supreme, and I literally fell in love with the ‘fire cider’, a perfect drink to warm up chilly autumn days. The owner, Jean-François, a true enthusiast, spares no effort in surprising visitors’ taste buds and producing quality products that reflect the unique character of our region. It’s hard to leave without a bottle or two. Domaine RITT, Cidrerie & Vergers also offers non-alcoholic products that are just as incredible.

Third stop: Les Vergers du Cap

It’s the zen oasis of the tour. With its commitment to organic farming, this orchard attracts visitors ready to travel galaxies (or at least miles) to taste their produce. Apples, squash, pears, even garlic: this is nature’s buffet. Alain and Pascal, these beaming market gardeners, share their stories with a generosity that makes you want to sit down under an apple tree and enjoy the moment.

 Last stop: Verger Guimond

The two Guimond brothers, Francis and Gilles, are bursting with energy and ideas. Their enthusiasm is contagious! As well as their famous apple jelly (a hug in a jar), they grow hydroponic lettuces worthy of NASA. Their innovative spirit is impressive, and their quaint shop is the perfect place (link in french) to end this tour.

The icing (or apple?) on the cake: Bellevue Road

A route so beautiful it could have its own Instagram account, with its spectacular views of the St. Lawrence and the Charlevoix mountains. The Cap-Saint-Ignace apple-growers’ circuit (link in french) is an authentic gourmet getaway well worth the diversions.

Why not take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a bucolic stroll along the Petit Cap trail, a picnic by the river in the old wharf area or a gourmet stop at Babel Café… I guarantee you’ll leave with your heart and basket full!
