I wanted to be an artist, like the song. I dream of exploring all kinds of mediums. Right now it’s photography, but I’d love to take it further. I seem to be waiting for a flash of genius, exploring. My daughters love art too. The beautiful thing about being a child is that it seems you’re more easily proud of what you create. You don’t ask yourself too many questions, you just go with the flow and find it beautiful. At least, that’s what I see when I watch my daughters create.

 A celebration of art

From July 2 to 27, 2025, free Village en Arts activities will take place at L’Espace culturel du Quartier Saint-Nicolas (ECQSN). Two years ago, I brought my children along and we celebrated art in a number of activities. In the next few lines, I’ll tell you about our day at the 2023 edition of Village en Arts.

The event offers two very interesting aspects of the ECQSN’s mission: to awaken young people to the arts and to create meeting places.

 Young artists at work

We began by admiring the young artists at work in a youth mural mentoring program. This program is offered to local teenagers aged 12 to 17. Supervised by professional artists, they each create a mural on a hot-air balloon-shaped structure, which will be proudly displayed in the family area of La Cour arrière at the Festibière de Lévis during the month of August. We were very impressed by the talent involved, and the girls are already thinking of taking part, perhaps when they’re old enough!

What’s more, every weekend, activities are offered free of charge, without reservation and open to the public. On-site artists present a variety of introductory workshops. During our visit, there was a silkscreen workshop and another on embroidery. The girls loved creating their own bandana from an illustration by artists Catherine Baril and Félix Tremblay, on hand to explain the process.

For the embroidery workshop, it was artist Émilie Proulx who successfully passed on her passion to the girls, as I had to order materials to make them at home as soon as we got back. Let’s just say I didn’t hesitate for a single second – I’ve rarely seen them so calm and focused! I’d say we’ve succeeded in our mission for artistic awakening, wouldn’t you? They’ve even asked us to go back next weekend to try out the next workshops.

A museum in the heart of the village

Finally, as the event takes place on the ECQSN site, you should of course take the opportunity to take a look inside to visit the exhibits and craft boutique. You’ll find the permanent exhibition Le coeur d’un village, which tells the story of the village of Saint-Nicolas. There are also temporary exhibitions at different times of the year, focusing on local history and/or art in various forms.
