For several years now, I’ve been very inspired by innovative agricultural projects. I’m increasingly aware of the importance of this kind of initiative to our collective health, and I’m amazed by the bold people who are feeding us healthy food while taking care of the environment.

I realise that it’s a privilege to be able to put what we want on our plates, which is all the more reason to make good use of it! In short, while it’s easier to eat locally during the summer months, I was delighted to discover a few farms that offer a surprising variety of fresh food, even in winter.

 A fan of fresh vegetables

Less than thirty minutes from Lévis, Le Lopin (link in french), an organic vegetable farm, member of the Family Farmers network, offers organic baskets all year round. You can also order tasty vegetables by the piece from their online winter shop. It’s super user-friendly: you place your order online, choose the day you want to pick up your produce at the farm and collect it on the spot in a self-service format.

Our family are real fans of fresh vegetables, and we were delighted to be treated to carrots, rabiole, radishes, celery, bok choy, spinach and exquisite mesclun in the middle of January! The young couple who own the farm advocate local marketing, respect for the land and exceptional freshness of their vegetables. It’s a real pleasure to buy from Le Lopin.

A farm stand open all year round

On the same row, just a minute further on, is the Caprijol (link in french) farm and its goat counter. This is a great family-run business, sharing the values of environmental responsibility as well as social responsibility by raising public awareness of the importance of sustainable practices. You’ll have to come back in the spring to see their herd of over a thousand goats in their pasture!

Winter and summer alike, you can get your hands on their high-quality products at their farm stand. We braved the bitterly cold January wind to try their cheeses, in particular feta, a firm cheese with spicy peppers, and their creamy dulce de leche caramel (which won a prize in an international competition in France). There’s also meat, eggs, honey and a few products from local businesses. We were tempted by lacto-fermented gherkins from Jardin de Flore and caramel cookie from Nature Gourmande. A real treat for the taste buds!

The perfect place to have a bite to eat

Another good address in Bellechasse is Ferme Mille Fleurs, which raises and cooks Highland beef and rustic pork. With as few intermediaries as possible between the farm and the consumer, Mille Fleurs guarantees outstanding organic meats, and the owners’ experience in the kitchen guarantees unique flavours. The animals have access to the outdoors all year round, so you can go and see them when you visit.

Winter forest trails are also available on their land, either on foot or on snowshoes, so you can stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh air. From mid-January, their food court will be back in operation, with their signature poutine and homemade Highland beef burger on the menu. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat in a warm, authentic atmosphere!
