We don’t know about you, but ever since we were kids, we’ve often dreamt of putting ourselves in the shoes of a musher… And then three dogs, including two huskies, came into our lives. We moved to Quebec. And in the winter of 2021, we spent the winter in a cabin in the middle of the famous Parc des Appalaches. In short, we had everything we needed to enjoy snow scooters on an almost daily basis… A dream come true!

 Long live the snow scooter!

Living in a refuge in the middle of the Parc des Appalaches, the snow scooter quickly became our number 1 means of getting around. Of course, there’s the 9-kilometers Défricheurs trail, which has been specially laid out to provide the best conditions for practicing, but for us, the best thing is to get out and about from our cabin, on the snow scooter trail. Our favourite thing to do is to set off from our hut along the forest tracks, because here our doggies can go anywhere with us.

After a snowfall, we always wait for the snowmobiles to pass so that the snow is well compacted. It’s in these conditions that the sliding is at its best and, above all, the least tiring! We can tell you that we’ve already tried to practice in powder snow, and it’s clearly a lot harder for us and our doggies!

 A highly intuitive activity

We often set off at speed. Jack and Neirock, our two doggies, are super excited at this point, but the trails are anything but flat. So we quickly reach the first climb and it’s up to us to help them.

It couldn’t be easier. You might think that the snow scooter requires perfect technique beforehand, but it’s very intuitive to use. The snow scooter is a bit like the scooter we see on our pavements in summer. All you have to do is keep your weight on your ‘support’ leg and push the scooter with your other leg, using a rocking motion. That’s when you realise that scootering is a sporting activity, and that your back and thigh muscles are particularly hard at work.

But this effort is greatly mitigated by the breathtaking beauty of the natural surroundings. We’re lucky enough to be in the heart of the Parc des Appalaches, and nowhere else is this activity so beautiful!

On the downhill sections, the scooter picks up so much speed that you literally fly off the handlebars. And sometimes a fall is inevitable, as Gérard can testify! But, rest assured, the snow cushions the impact quite well, and we laugh as we watch our two huskies continue to run while the scooter chases them!

After all that excitement, we’re all happy to be back in the cosy warmth of our cabin. As we savour a nice cup of coffee by the stove, our doggies sit down on their cushions and quickly fall into the arms of Morpheus. We watch them fall asleep, their paws flailing in the air and little noises coming from their mouths.
