You don’t have to go halfway around the world to enjoy memorable experiences. Les Croisières Lachance’s 1000 Little Penguins cruise in the Chaudière-Appalaches region is just such an experience. Departing from Berthier-sur-Mer, it’s a unique cruise on the St. Lawrence River!

 Socket 2

Last year, our outing to 1000 petits pingouins with our moms was cancelled due to strong winds on the river, so we improvised a roadtrip along the Route des Navigateurs. This year, it’s just the opposite, and we’re in for a magnificent day with Les Croisières Lachance!

Our expedition is aboard the Lachance III. We leave just after the Vent des Îles, which drops people off at Grosse-île (a national historic site I highly recommend you visit) and continues on to the 1000 little penguins.

An outing commented by real people

In any case, the atmosphere on board is joyful. Captain Jean-François Lachance tells us the story of the river, the islands we come across, his family’s life through the seasons and the ups and downs of the river, while Sylvain Lessard accompanies us with a wealth of knowledge about the presence of little penguins here and other species that can also be seen en route and on this rock.

 Impressive!

The closer we get to the island of 1,000 little penguins, the more excited we feel on board. Especially since Mr Lessard has just told us that this year, there are over 1,200 penguins on board. The Vent des Îles, which preceded us, can be seen close to the rock in observation mode. Penguins fly and circle around Vent des Îles. An impressive sight.

It's our turn to be close!

Le Vent des Îles leaves the observation site to pick up the people who have visited Grosse-île, and it’s now our turn to approach and observe them from the boat for a good twenty minutes.

In addition to the many little penguins we see on the islet and in flight, we also see several swimming in the river.

 It's already over...

The return trip was a leisurely one, always in anecdote mode about the river and the various attractions to be seen. We enjoyed the beauty of the river as it unfurled endlessly, and took advantage of the fine weather and the river breeze. Seriously, we all really enjoyed this outing on the river.

The word “capoté” came up when I asked our moms about their impressions of the day. That says it all.

We also came away a little smarter about the river’s history and our cultural heritage, which is always fun around the dinner table on a Saturday night!

And what can we say about the entire Croisières Lachance crew?

Professional and courteous through and through!
