Faventure tells us about their weekend between dogs and wolves in Chaudière-Appalaches

FAVENTURE

A family getaway that reconnected us with winter. There are places that leave a lasting impression. Places that take us back to basics, that create memories we want to relive the very next day. For us, Chalets Villégiature et Pourvoirie Daaquam, in Saint-Just-de-Bretenières, is exactly that. A magical interlude in the heart of the Appalachians, where everything invites you to slow down, breathe and marvel with your family.

A chalet that's got everything you need (and everything you need to get off your feet)

From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The chalet was spacious, superbly equipped: full kitchen, fireplace, cosy bedding and, above all, a breathtaking view of the Daaquam River. In the morning, it was a real spectacle: the light on the snow, the silence, the children still in their pyjamas, their cheeks glued to the window. It was like being alone in the world.

The hostel quickly became our haunt. We stopped there for meals, to play a game of board games by the fire, or just to chat with other travellers. And what about Cartouche, the owner’s dog, who welcomed everyone like an old friend?

Activities to make you love winter (even if you're sensitive to cold)

We had a great time:

Ice fishing made us work on our patience! The children were convinced they were going to catch a monster. We came away empty-handed, but happy.

Snowmobiling was a real revelation: Max, the owner, guided us around the trails with an infectious passion. We even rode along the famous “American lines”, with a little history lesson thrown in!

Dog-sledding? Magical! My daughter and I shared a sled while the older kids took the one with Dad. Seeing the dogs at work, their energy, their joy… it’s a memory we’ll all treasure. If you prefer hiking, snowshoeing or a horse-drawn carriage ride, you can do all that at the outfitter too!

We took full board (the best idea of the weekend): all meals were served at the inn, and were always tasty, hearty and comforting. Special mention must go to the poutine, a real favourite!

An unforgettable encounter at the Sanctuaire de loups LUPO

The next day, we took a short diversions to the Sanctuaire de loups LUPO in Sainte-Apolline-de-Patton. And wow. Three she-wolves and a wolf live here, in a protected, peaceful and inspiring environment. Luigi, the founder, is a veritable walking encyclopaedia. He answered all our questions with passion and patience.

The children were fascinated. And the idea of one day being able to sleep on site in a luxury tent with a view of the wolves? Unforgettable. We’ve promised ourselves we’ll be back next summer.

There are also trails, a picnic area and a magnificent view of the Parc des Appalaches. Perfect for prolonging the magic a little longer.

A weekend we’d have liked to have stretched

This stay at Chalets Villégiature et Pourvoirie Daaquam gave us a chance to really unwind. To experience winter differently, in all its beauty, gentleness and wildness. The children are still talking about it. And so are we.

So if you’re looking for a getaway where you can eat well, play outside, get together as a family, as a couple or with friends, put Chaudière-Appalaches on your list. You won’t be disappointed. Get your tuques and mittens ready, and let the magic happen.
