Au Québ has tested two new features at Station touristique Massif du Sud

Saint-Philémon
Au Québ

Some mountains are chosen for well-marked, groomed skiing and days without surprises. And then there’s the Station touristique Massif du Sud, where you come to get away from it all, explore… and experience the mountain in a whole new way!

This season, the resort is hitting hard with two great new features that speak directly to powder lovers: the return of the Catski and the opening of the 5th Dimension off-piste sector, a zone that’s just wild enough. And we had the great pleasure of putting them all to the test this week!

We tell you all about these two very different experiences, which gave us the chance to ski far off the beaten track, in a simply incredible setting.

 The return of the Catski

An adventure in the heart of the backcountry

Our adventure began slowly. We take the chairlift up, our eyes fixed on the frosted trees that transform the forest into a postcard setting, typical of the Massif du Sud. We could already feel that this wasn’t going to be a day like any other!

Once at the summit, we board the modern catski, which can accommodate eight people. Off we go into the backcountry of the Massif du Sud! For twenty minutes or so, we left the ski area to enter a much more remote sector. We finally arrived in an old forest clearing with a magnificent view of Mont Saint-Magloire. And in front of us… completely untouched powder! The kind of sight that puts a smile on your face even before the first turns!

The descents follow on naturally. The catski is waiting for us at the bottom of each line, ready to pull us up for another adventure. The terrain isn’t very steep, but you don’t need big drops to enjoy yourself here: the magic is in the quality of the snow and the feeling of exclusivity. We love it!

Good to know

The Massif du Sud Catski experience includes off-trail equipment, guide service, breakfast, lunch, snacks and even a beer/nacho combo to round off the day. It’s possible to book the catski privately or to sign up on the spot, subject to availability.

 The 5th Dimension

A new wilderness area

A complete change of atmosphere for the second new feature! We headed for the 5th Dimension sector, an unpatrolled, wooded, natural off-piste area designed for skiers looking for a more alpine experience.

To get there, we put on our skins at the summit of the Massif du Sud. For those of you in the know, the 5th Dimension is located to the west of slope 17, just a short distance from the resort.

While we’re no strangers to the legendary glades for which the mountain is famous, here we discover a completely different face of the place. The terrain is wilder, less crowded, with good pitches and a sustained gradient that makes every turn downright satisfying.

What’s striking is that you’re in a resort, but you don’t feel it at all. The silence, the perfect snow, the dense forest… it’s simply magical.

Good to know

On the way back, skiers can generally get away without skins, but we strongly recommend snowboarders have skins to get around and get the most out of the experience.

 Two new products, one philosophy

The rumours are true… Station touristique Massif du Sud is definitely a must-see ski destination. Even more so with the return of the Catski and the opening of the 5th Dimension!

One thing’s for sure: at the Massif du Sud, you don’t just eat powder off the assembly line. It’s earned, discovered… and savored to the full.

So, see you there?
