The school break will be starting soon, and it’s often a time of transition to make the most of the last winter holidays with the family, while starting to dream of spring. So we thought we’d take a look at some out-of-the-ordinary activities to surprise the kids and have a great time together!

Dive into the world of jewellery

Our first stop was L’ATELIER .925 (link in french) in Vieux-Charny, where we went as a mother and daughter duo to learn about jewellery. Kim, the jeweller and owner, is clearly passionate about her art, and passing on her know-how is a way of sharing a value that is dear to me and that I’m trying to pass on to my children. Through this project, Kim hopes to connect with her community and inspire people to delve into the world of jewellery.

She offers a variety of workshops in small, intimate groups, which allows for a truly personalised approach. My daughter and I chose to learn the basic techniques to create minimalist silver rings for ourselves.

As well as sharing a creative moment, what a wonderful souvenir it is to keep the jewellery we’ve made ourselves. It’s also a great opportunity to see the meaning and value of handmade work, while developing patience and meticulousness, two qualities that benefit from being put into practice.

 A surprising new General Store

adorned with our new creations, we noticed that a new business had set up shop on the top floor of this beautiful century-old brick building on the corner of the street: Gomme Balloune – Magasin Général Éclaté.

It’s a playful space where, like its name, the focus is on gourmet treats, but also on buying local. Accessories, stationery, home decor, beauty care, games and, of course, sweets fill the shelves of this brightly-lit space, which also has a bubble tea, coffee and hot chocolate counter.

Our choice was a precious and highly prized palette of Dubai chocolate with pistachio cream, concocted by Émotions Gâteaux, a chocolat artist from St-Romuald. A delight for the eyes and even more for the taste buds!

Encounter with an animal that "has no faults"

Next, the whole family took the Route des Rivières towards St-Étienne-de-Lauzon to visit AlpagaSelect. As soon as we got out of the car, the children saw the alpaca far away, and Linda, the co-owner, greeted us with a smile. You can tell straight away how much she loves this farm life project, which has been her passion for nearly ten years. We feel privileged to have access to this environment and, of course, to learn more about this animal which, as she herself says, “has no faults”. We were offered a walk with the alpacas, who are curious and sociable.

Contact with these charming animals instantly soothes us, and one of the instructions is to remain calm and reassuring with the alpacas who accompany us on the walk. So it was with this gentle, peaceful energy that we crossed the field, then the maple grove before returning to the farm, to the tune of Linda’s anecdotes about her endearing animals.

 A real favorite for children

Alpacas are rather shy by nature and are particularly fond of children (who are less imposing than adults), and to say that ours had a real crush on them would be an understatement.

The alpaca fleece is shorn once a year, just before summer, and this wool has unique properties for comfort in both summer and winter: warmth, softness, strength, high quality, it’s an ethical fibre, durable and very fine.

You can get your hands on mittens, socks, tuques and scarves at the boutique on site, and Linda’s felting creations are also made with great delicacy. A must-see!
