The region's first underground mine, the King Mine Historic Center offers you a memorable experience in the heart of real restored mining buildings. The site offers an immersive tour using real mining equipment and highlights the hard work of generations of workers in the mining industry.
The circuit begins with the forge, where we present the vast territory occupied by chrysotile asbestos mines in the MRC des Appalaches. Visiting the forge allows you to understand the functions of such a building in industry, as well as the work of a blacksmith.
The visit continues in the winch building where, thanks to the imposing machinery still in place, you can imagine the complexity and importance of the work of its operators.
The route ends with the headframe building where we present, among other things, the different stages to be carried out before and after the work shift of miners and other trades. At the top of the headframe, the observatory offers a 360-degree view of the city of Thetford Mines, at a height of 140 feet (42 meters).
Discover the new underground gallery offering an unforgettable immersive experience. Descend into the depths of the tunnel to discover the fascinating world of underground workers. Going back in time from the 1980s to the 1910s, we invite you to discover the evolution of mining techniques, work equipment and safety standards.
