  • Discovering the vestiges of the very first slipway in Canada;
  • Trying out my theories by lifting the boat onto the rails myself on the scale slipway model;
  • Being astounded at the weight of a 50-lb diving helmet.

TheA.C. Davie Shipyard is the site of the very first slipway of its kind built in Canada and in North America. Vestiges of the original facilities are still present on the site. This Scottish invention, revolutionary at the time, was brought to Lévis by Allison Davie, who established the shipyard in 1829 with his father-in-law, Georges Taylor. To get to know the love story that led to Allison Davie to marry the daughter of Georges Taylor and going into business with him, you’ll have to discover it during your visit!

During a fun and interactive visit, you’ll get to know more about why Lévis was the perfect location for setting up this shipyard. In order for boats to be repaired, they had to first be taken out of the water. How was this done? That’s exactly what you’ll discover thanks to a scale model that you can activate yourself!

You can also view an interactive video that will show you how the boats were caulked so that water didn’t penetrate the hull. At the time, there was even more action than just at the shipyard. The A.C. Davie Shipyard team even went to rescue boats as far away as Newfoundland! The diver, wearing a 200-lb suit, had to stay under the water until they had finished the repairs. With no light underwater, the diver had to do the work more or less blind. It was quite a remarkable job to have!
